Implants
If you are looking for a way to replace a missing tooth that is most similar to a natural tooth an implant may be a great option. An implant is a root shaped titanium post that is placed in the bone to which a crown is attached. An implant can look and act likes a natural tooth.
Not all situations allow implants. Initial records such as x rays & CT scans may be collected to ensure the success of an implant. Determining factors includes:
Location
Quality of bone
Oral Health
Smoking
Genetics
Diabetes
Once it is determined an implant can be done. Preparation begins at the site. A space is made in the bone to insert the titanium implant. Once it is in place the implant may be covered in the gum tissue and allowed to heal. After the gum breaks an incision is made and the crown base (aka the abutment) is attached to the implant. An impression of the abutment will then be taken to make the crown that will be fitted on the abutment to complete the implant. The completed implant can now be used like a normal tooth. It may feel so natural that you will forget it’s not your original tooth.
So the question is, “How long does an implant last”? Implants longevity depends on multiple factors such as:
Location of the implant
Quality of the bone
Oral Health
Smoking
Genetics
These are the same factors used to determine if the patient is eligible to receive an implant.
Some implants can last a lifetime. The implant that has the most chance of succeeding for a long time is the one that is given the most care. So continue brushing and flossing consistently.
